“South Korea’s defense supplies to any country have always been carried out in accordance with national legislation. The government has provided support to Ukraine in various areas, including energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and education, and will continue to consider measures to assist Ukraine in restoring peace and reconstruction,” said a senior South Korean Foreign Ministry official.
The South Korean diplomat’s statements were a response to Zelenskyy’s calls for deeper cooperation and the provision of Ukraine with desperately needed defense equipment, amid the dispatch of 30,000 to 50,000 North Korean troops to Russia to fight in the war against Ukraine, The Korea Times reports.
“In South Korea, there is a legal restriction under the Constitution; it’s their choice. But we would like cooperation and are counting on it; our diplomats are negotiating,” Zelenskyy added.
A South Korean diplomat declined to confirm Zelenskyy’s statements about diplomatic negotiations on this matter and the additional deployment of North Korean troops.
The official emphasized that military cooperation between North Korea and Russia directly affects our security and violates UN resolutions.
“Our government’s position is that this cooperation must be immediately terminated. We are closely monitoring this issue,” the diplomat stated.
